Why Photography?

Remember when your mom asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up?  Most kids would list of things like a fire fighter, second basemen for the Boston Red Sox, a teacher, a dolphin trainer.  When I was asked that question as a kid there were answers like a zoologist or a teacher but not until I was in high school did I ever consider a photographer. The summer of 1997 I spent at summer camp like the 7 summer before but this year my counselor was the photography counselor.  I hadn't signed up to take photography that summer but because Sarah was awesome she let all of her campers play in the dark room a little during cabin activity time.  The day I watched an image I took magically show up on the seemingly white paper just be being soaked in clear liquid I was hooked.  From that day on I was interested, I'm not sure I'd say in love but there was an artistic seed that was starting to take root.

The following year I started high school and unfortunatly for most freshman photography was pretty much an impossible class to get into.  It was always full of upperclassmen before us froshy's ever got to pick electives, but I didn't let that stop me.  A friend of mine was also just getting into photography so we made a deal with the photo teacher (shout out to Mr. Strom!!!) where we could pay the class lab fee and just stay after school and play in the dark room and he would teach us even though we didn't have a real class.  I spent more time in my high school dark room then anywhere else on that campus over the next four years.  So when Jr year comes around and that "what are you going to be when you grow up" question surfaces again and this time with high exspectations of, not only an answer, but of plans for college, I was torn between something science related (I had loved Biology and thought maybe that would be fun, end up working at a zoo with animals) but the thought of AP Bio in my schedule for Sr year, to be honest, scared the crap out of me.  So photography it was.  It was the only thing I ever really LOVED to do, and was something I felt that I was actually pretty good at.  I had after all taken two 3 dot images that year.  (Side bar:  dots were Mr. Stroms way to telling us which photos we took were good, bad or great.  One dot meant it's in focus and doesn't totally suck, two dots was- hey you did a good job this is a nice shot.  Three dots was pretty much you're the best and this image is awesome!!!).

So photography it was.... the next question was what the heck am I going to do with a degree in photography?  Well I went all the way through four years of college and still had no answer to that.  I am so beyond grateful that my  parents were so supportive and never once told me that photography would be a waste.  Even when I swore I'd be a broke artist, begging for change in front of the Burger King on Hunnington Ave they never told me that I couldn't.  I'm so glad that all these things in my life lined up and sent me on this path because of all the places I could be or things I could be doing with my life I'm so happy and proud to be a photographer.

Wedded Bliss | Pinterest

Planning a wedding is insane,  I've been in and around the wedding business for the past 6  years and I'm still completely overwhelmed when it comes to planning my own wedding.  I have no lack of ideas but getting those ideas from Pinterest to reality is much more difficult then I had ever dreamed!!!  And so begins my Wedded Bliss series.  I'm planning to use this series to help me bring my crazy ideas to life.  In hopes of having you hold me accountable for actually creating, dreaming and staying on the wedding planning timeline and thus can keep me in the whole Bliss stage rather then me ending up on the Wedded Stress side of things. I figured the best way to start is to share with you some of my Pinterest inspiration board.  I've got a million ideas and let me tell you if you are not already on Pinterest- go sign up right now.... no seriously righ tnow.... i'll wait.

Ok now that you are a fully functioning member of this fantastic inspiration community- you should follow me and that means maybe you can actually HELP me with all this planning insanity!!!!  I could spend days of my life looking at wedding blogs, magazines etc and come up with millions of ideas that end up going in on ear and out the other.  When time comes to actually think about place settings I know I found this great idea a few months ago about doing something cool with the napkin and menu cards but now for the life of me I can't remember.... well this is where Pinterest comes in.  If i see something online I pin it.  If I see something in a magazine I take a photo with my iphone and pin it.  If i see something at a wedding I'm shooting I upload my image and pin it.  See where this is going?  It's the perfect way to keep track of all these awesome ideas.  So far it's been 99% ideas and 1% action but my plan is to work on that...  I'm hoping to add a few DIY items to my wedding and hopefully I can use this Wedded Bliss series to help me stay on track.

I'm defiantly going to need lots of help form all of you- I'm sure I'll be posting lots of idea and will need some help narrowing down to the best ideas and please, people, tell me when these ideas are INSNAE so I don't go beating my head against a wall... Like when I thought about renting a cow to have it graze around the grounds of the estate we are getting married at.... yeah seriously considered that.  I really like cows... but we are getting married at an ocean front estate not a farm.  So these are some of the things I'm going to need a little help with.  I have a million ideas and some of them could be great and some not so much.  So what do you think of what I have so far??

  • I want all my bridesmaids to be in different dresses- not just different styles in one fabric.  My girls are all really different in personality and I really want them to all find a dress that they not only love but one that fits their style.... of course some of them still insist that I pick it out but I'm really hoping they all find something that they all really love!
  • Photography- I've already got this one wrapped up.... the fantastic J&M will be with us on our wedding day and there is nothing that makes me more excited then their classic style!
  • The dress is also taken care of- one more thing to officially check off the list now that I picked it up this week!!!!  I'm so glad I got my Pricilla of Boston gown before they went out of business, I'm definably a Melissa Sweet bride :)
  • Our plan as of right now.... wait who am I kidding... my plan (Silas is interested in some items but flowers and colors are not his first choice of wedding topic) as of right now is to have a balance of classic and soft decor- with maybe a little rustic/chic thrown in.  I love the table scape above with all the green and ivory colored flowers.  I'm working with my florist Carrie to do some really great table scapes full of some fun glass and silver, candle stick and table ware yard sale finds.
  • Hair and make up are something I'm struggling with.  I have a girl that I'm super excited to work with that I know will do a killer job but as for style-  I think I change my mind every week.
  • As for menus and paper goods- I'm counting on the wonderful Lucinda to pull through and wow me... I could come up with a million ideas but none of them could hold a candle to the amazing creativity of this lady!!!!

In case you didn't know...

1.  I am the worst speller in the world and use google as a spell check at least three times a day. 2. I have really big feet and often get really discouraged while shoe shopping- all the pretty shoes are always tiny, or they are super cute but not when you put them on really big feet.

3. I love houses and think if I ever decide to make photography back into just a personal hobby I might become a realtor.  I probably spend five or six hours a week on realtor.com

4. I have a huge appreciation for other forms of art (especially drawing and painting) and sometimes feel silly calling myself an artist because all I can draw are stick people.

5. I drink milk out of the carton even though I know it's gross.

6. Facebook is a full on addiction, I've been on it since it was first expanded from Harvard to include UMASS, BC, BU and Northeastern.

7. Silas and I re-met on myspace.

8. I actually flew to GA to spend New Years with him having not seen him in person in over 4 years and really not knowing him that well- good thing he hadn't become a serial killer.

9. Coby is the first dog I've ever had.  We always had cats growing up and as much as I love cats, this puppy has defiantly won my heart.  Plus I LOVE that he doesn't shed.

10. I actually love the smell of fixer.  Makes me miss the darkroom days.

Have a questions for me?  Ask away- ask ANYTHING!!!! I'm an open book and someone who asks me a question here in the comment section will win an itunes card.
