What makes Spring Smith Studios special?

There are a lot of answers to this question but the simple answer is that Spring Smith Studios has me :) Maybe that sounds a little silly but I have a unique, creative vision and a personality to match and those are vital parts of my business.  Anyone can package their work in a beautiful box, have a pretty blog or website, or offer Couture Books but no other studio has me. I am that unique part of my studio that makes Spring Smith Studios different, and hopefully that's the aspect of my business that my clients fall in love with.  Of course I want them to love Couture Books, my little studio and the style of my black and white signature images but if they only love those things and not my sense of humor and my ability to talk for hours on end about nothing we might not be the perfect match. I want everything I do as a part of my business to be a reflection of myself.  For example, there are a few charities that are very near and dear to my heart and I have always wished that I had more money to donate to these organizations in need.  My solution-  every wedding I book now gets to pick one of these charities to donate a portion of their wedding contract price too. (Read more about this here). I have spent so many hours trying to brain storm and think up ways to share who I really am with all of you, so that anyone out there who thinks "I love this girl and could talk to her for hours" will hopefully remember that when looking for a wedding or lifestyle photographer.  My ultimate goal is to have all of my clients turn into friends that I keep in touch with over the years following their wedding or portrait session.  Hopefully they are people that when they come back to Mt. Washington Valley for an anniversary will stop in to my studio for a big hug and a cupcake!

When I started my business I wasn't sure how to find these couples.  How do you find couples that you have something in common with?  How do you find couples that you want to be friends with?  How do you find couples that you are so excited about their wedding you keep track of their facebook countdown just waiting to spend that special day with?  Well, I've been pretty lucky and have found a lot of these clients through my local community.  Some of my clients have been old summer camp friends or old high school friends but many are people I've never met before they walk through my door for a consultation.  How did those couples find me? Mainly through past clients, other photographer referrals, vendor relationships and some found me through blog features.

Having a community of vendors (including other photographers) has been such a huge resource for my business.  I've established some great relationships with local venues, local vendors (The White Mt. Cupcakery is across the hall from my studio and they have become some of my best friends).  I'm so honored to have other photographers in this area as well as down in the Boston area who send referrals my way for dates they are already booked.  All of these things have lead to exponential growth in my business.  Now that these couples have my name and website my next step is to filter anyone who isn't a good fit for me.  I try to make it as clear as I can that I value the relationship with my clients and that that piece of the puzzle is as important as their desire for my photography skills.  Having that connection is key to capturing the kind of images that they see and hopefully want from their wedding day.  I don't take every wedding that comes my way- and I make it clear from the very first communication that I want couples to know that I am going to be sure we are a good fit before anyone signs a contract.  Telling a client that if you are not a good fit and that you are not interested it scary.  You are turning away money and who knows if you can book that date with someone else.  But trust me, coming from someone who has booked that couple because it was a pay check, it's worth it to turn them down ahead of time then spend hours and hours trying to make them happy when you knew from the very beginning that you were not ever going to be able to make them happy.  It will be an uphill battle the whole way and it will drain you mentally and physically more then that money can make up for.

Finding a way to stand out from the crowd and creating your brand is hard.  There are so many studios out there with a cute logo, a fun pattern background to their blog and a more affordable price then you can offer.  How do you set yourself apart, how do you get people to look past that and see the value?  I'm not sure I've figured that part out yet to be honest.  I'm working on it but I still struggle with the "is my blog too generic, are my colors not bold enough, is my website personal enough or too personal"?  All I know is that the first time I got an email with a bride telling me that she loved my about me section and felt like I must be her best friend from college twin, I was so excited!  Unfortunately ,I was already booked for her date but knowing that someone connected with what I wrote filled me with so much joy!

So my plan is to keep doing what I'm doing.  Tweaking things here and there and hopefully little by little I'll create the kind of brand or lovemark that people will connect with and will be so excited to share with others.

Kathy & Bill | Bedford Village Inn Wedding

Kathy and Bill were married on Dec 10th at the Bedford Village Inn. They celebrated in style and I was so honored to be a part of their wedding day. Kathy wore a beautiful necklace that I just couldn't stop admiring and being the sweet heart that she is, she even offered for it to be my something borrowed for my own wedding.  I just love my clients!!!!  Anyway, back to their wedding.  I really loved how even though this was second wedding for both the bride and groom and it was a morning wedding, they didn't skimp on any of the formalities.  The Inn was decorated for Christmas so there were beautiful details everywhere creating a perfect atmosphere for a romantic wedding.  All in all it was a perfect morning for a wedding and a fun filled afternoon reception!  I also had the pleasure of working with Melissa as my second shooter and I couldn't have had better company for the day. Merry Christmas Kathy & Bill, enjoy!!!

Instagram... for photographers who don't have a point and shoot.

I received a Nikon P3 when I graduated college almost 6 years ago... yikes... can't believe that was almost 6 years ago!!!!  Time flies... well no need to mention how slightly out of date that camera is now.  It's still a great point and shoot for someone who wants good images but isn't a control freak like me.  I find that my iphone has really become my point and shoot.  The problem being the lack of control (even with the camera + app). I find taking photos of everyday, typically mundane things becomes interesting and fun when you use instagram.  You get to put fun filters on them (which typically I'm against, I am a clean, simple processing girl when it comes to my own photography but when it's a cute photo of my dog in the tub covered in dirt it's fun to slap a little vintage style filter on it.  As much as I'd love a few of the new flashy point and shoot cameras (some are even fancy these days and have interchangeable lens) I'm finding that with instagram I'm having fun taking photos with my phone and even if I can't control all the aspects that I want I'm still capturing the memories and that's really all that matters.

*This year's Christmas tree, The Christmas Camel at Mt. Vernon, Our front door (I know I'm not actually a McKenney yet), Coby-man, Fuzzy slippers you warm up in the microwave (great gift idea), Coby nose, Starbucks peppermint mocha, Silas and I with our new cozy blanket from J&M, Coby's morning walk, The wreath on our side door, We are going to have a white Christmas!!!!, "What you don't like my new mud boots?", Decorating my parents house for their annual bowling league Christmas Party (they don't actually bowl.... it's a long story), Lyla James AKA the cutest baby girl ever!!!, Some last min Christmas shopping and The Elephant Walk- some of the best food I've ever had, period.*

Merry Christmas Eve Everyone, don't forget to take some photos while you celebrate this wonderful holiday season with family and friends, even if they use an on camera flash and don't have killer Bokeh because documenting these memories is still the #1 goal!!!

Starting a Business... when you are not really sure how

I'm defiantly no expert on starting your own business, but I have done it, and so far so good.  When I started shooting portraits, families, pageant girls, babies and weddings I was so far from wanting to start my own business.  I had moved to TX with my then boyfriend, now fiance, and was looking for a job.  After finding a whole lot of nothing photography related I ended up hosting at a restaurant called Ironwood Grill (shout out to Tom and Keri- best onion rings and steak EVER!!!!).  While I did love the people I worked with and the food I didn't feel like I was doing much in terms of self fulfillment.  I started searching for photographers, photography studios, galleries, anything I could find that was photo related.  I came across a website for Image Forward Photography.  Which was a small family run studio right in town.  I emailed the owner, Debbie, and asked if she happened to need any help.  Well it was the wrong time of year and she wasn't very busy but she had me come by and chat one afternoon anyway.  We chatted and laughed and I felt like she could be a really fun person to work for.  A few weeks later Debbie called and offered me a job doing some design work and some photography work.  A perfect fit in my mind.

I worked for Image Forward shooting weddings, senior portraits, engagements and lots of family photos for over two years.  They became my family away from home and I miss those ladies dearly.  I remember the day when Debbie told me when I moved away that I should do this on my own.  I was shocked!  I had not even considered having my own photo studio.  I knew the basic in's and out's of our whole process but couldn't imagine doing it without these ladies.  If it wasn't for Debbie planting that seed I'm not sure I would have ever taken that leap.  But here I am 5+ years later with a growing photography studio of my very own.

Starting a business is scary!  There are no if's, and's or but's about it.  But it is also really exciting.  I didn't exactly jump in with two feet when I started Concept Spring Studios (my original studio name).  I started with two weddings, both for family friends.  I was paid very little, it was mostly about experience and having some of my own images to show. Because of the years I had spent with Image Forward I felt like I really had a great platform on which to jump off into the world of professional photographers.  That first year I shot a few small weddings and slowly built my portfolio.  By the following year I was booking weddings 8+ months out and was feeling quite confident and since then my business has continued to grow.  I now am a full time photographer, I have an assistant who works with me for 90% of my weddings and in June of 2011 I opened an official studio space in North Conway village.

The best advice I could give anyone starting their own photography business is to ASK QUESTIONS!!!! Attend a WPPI, PUG or other local seminar.  Listen to others in this industry, network with other photographers in your area and ask every and any questions you have.  Truly having people that I could look up to encourage me was such a huge help in those early days when doubt would creep in from the dark corners and scare me away from the hope of quitting my full time job.  To be honest, having those people that I can look up to now when I need encouragement and help is still one of the most valuable resources I have.

The professional photographer community is so special, most photographers out there today are very open with their ideas, their techniques and their advice.  I believe in sharing all and any information I have.  Nothing is a secret, there is nothing I do that I wouldn't gladly share the ideas and resources that I have with others.  What makes us unique is ourselves and no one can copy that so why not share all the other good stuff that helps everyone along the way.

I've always wanted to teach, or mentor or find some way to give back... I may not be at a point where I can be much help right now but anyone out there who needs advice, another set of eyes to look at something or even just someone to share struggles with and know you are not alone- please, email me and Id be more then happy to help in any way I can. Seriously.... if you are thinking "oh that would be cool but...."  stop right there and just send me an email: spring.smith@me.com and share your story, your struggles and your hopes for the future because by just sharing them you are taking a huge step in the right direction, and I'm happy to help however I can.
